Problem Solving

Throughout the course, we will be coming back to the decision making process and discussing how we solve problems. Many of the things we discuss in the course refer to avoiding the pitfalls that many people make in problem solving. In your opinion, what is problem solving? Why is it important? What is an example of a time you succeeded at solving a problem? What is a time you failed at solving a problem?

Your work should be at least 500 words, but mostly draw from your own personal experience. This should be written in first person and give examples from your life. Be sure if you are using information from the readings that you properly cite your readings in this, and in all assignments.

(Answer) At the time of facing a grave problem, one’s cognitive abilities are severely compromised. Not only is an individual faced with a fight or flight response but, also is unable to think logically as one is clouded with emotions. This is why it is essential to practice grace under pressure by building the responsive abilities and problem-solving abilities.

These practices might not cause an individual to solve a problem directly or immediately, but perhaps help them relatively maintain a calm and cogent temperament that would be far more helpful in finding a solution. With application and practice, one’s strategic response plan might be calibrated.

Strategic Response – “The strategic response plan (SRP) is a management tool for a response. It is a tool that an organisation or country might use in times of crisis. However, it can be used by individuals as well. The SRP entails training and practice with an assessment of problems. After a proper assessment, the SRP would train individuals to find and implement the appropriate solution whilst trying to incur the least amount of damage. A general SRP would include training exercises and modules in emergency scenarios. Furthermore, an SRP could involve fundamental “dos and don'ts” for unpredictable and unique situations. Such training plans help individuals eventually get over the nervousness and anxiety of an emergency situation and focus on finding a solution.

Faulty Attributions Included in our many decision-making errors is the way in which we explain actions and events around us. Based on our observations, we tend to make decisions about whether another person's actions are internally or externally caused. One model of attributional processes suggests that when we are familiar with a person, we rely on three judgments to make this decision: consistency of the person's action, distinctiveness of that action, and consensus of that action with actions of others....
