A researcher is looking to compare the caloric intake of students who report high levels of stress vs those who report low levels of stress. Write the null and alternative hypotheses.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Null hypothesis(NH): Everything equal, the caloric intake does not cause difference in the stress levels of those with high levels of stress (HS)and those experience low levels of stress(L.S)

NH: HS= L.S=/ 0 ( read the ‘=/‘ as not equal to zero sign )

Alternative hypothesis: 1) The caloric intake proportionally increases the difference between individuals with high levels of stress and those with low levels of stress.

2) The caloric intake proportionally decreases the difference between individuals with high levels of stress and those with low levels of stress.

AH: HS>L.S=0 or HS< L.S=0

A study of 201 female Canadian athletes find that their average caloric intake was 2703.7 kilocalories per day (kcal/d). The recommended caloric intake is 2811.5 kcal/d. Assume that the standard deviation for caloric intake among all female Canadian athletes is 880 kcal/d. Is there evidence that female Canadian athletes are deficient in caloric intake? State appropriate null and alternative hypotheses to test this. Find the z test statistic. What is the P-value? Write a conclusion. Test at the α =...

A researcher investigates whether daily exercise decreases long-term stress levels. On a national survey, the mean stress level of those who do not exercise is 8.5. The stress score rating is 0 to 10, whereby higher scores are associated with higher stress levels. The researcher recruited nine (9) participants who exercised daily for two weeks and recorded the following stress scores: 5, 5, 4, 3, 6, 2, 9, 4, 6 Showing calculations where necessary: a) State the null and the...

In 2011, a U.S. Census report determined that 55% of college students are working students. A researcher thinks this percentage has changed and surveys 194 college students. The researcher reports that 127 of the 194 are working students. Is there evidence to support the researcher's claim at the 1% significance level? Determine the null and alternative hypotheses. A researcher wants to determine whether high school students who attend an SAT preparation course score significantly different on the SAT than students who do not attend the preparation course. For those who do not attend the course, the population mean is 1050 (? = 1050). The 16 students who attend the preparation course average 1150 on the SAT, with a sample standard deviation of 300. On the basis of these data, can the researcher conclude that the preparation course...

An experiment is done to compare the effects of three situations: Situation 1 is tested in a “no-stress,” baseline situation; Situation 2 does a mental arithmetic task; and Situation 3 participants do a mock job interview. At the end of each session, the participants self-report their anxiety on a scale that ranges from 0=no anxiety to 20=extremely high anxiety. The researcher wants to know whether, overall, anxiety levels differed across these three different situations. Each of the 21 participants was...
