Old memories can often be retrieved from long term memory into working memory.

Everything is stored into long term memory for later reference through recall. The memory retained will be stored in long term memory for life. Remembering them easily will depend on how often we recall them. Recalling or retrieval is facilitated by cues, events etc. related to what we need to recall.

Working memory or short term memory is also called central executive who takes input from sensory memory and store it to long term memory and retrieve when necessary.
