Is it true that art has to have meaning?
This statement is true. Art cannot be created without a meaning. Art is a self-directed, creative activity that must begin with an intention. The intention might be profound, frivolous or anything in between, but it is always embedded within a set of experiences and desires that tell the story of its maker. That story is the true meaning of the artwork, even if the artist herself is unaware of it.
Artwork has a universal meaning that eveyone can agree upon. Plus, every person who sees the piece has some sort of reaction, whether it's "meh", or a deep meaning that only exists because of that persons human experiences. Nothing in this world exists without at least an inkling of meaning.
