According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2015:

  • Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 44,000 people.
  • Suicide was the third leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 14, and the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 and 34.

In 2016, the highest suicide rate (19.7) was among adults between 45 and 54 years of age. The second highest rate (19.0) occurred in those 85 years or older. Younger groups have had consistently lower suicide rates than middle-aged and older adults. In 2016, adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 had a suicide rate of 12.5. Thus, in 2016, approximately 5491 individuals falling in the age range of 15-24 years commited suicide.

The current population of the United States of America is 325,599,586.

About 500 children younger than 14 die from suicide each year and even more report suicidal ideation or thoughts about death. Because it is so rare, it can be difficult to identify who is likely to carry out an attempt before it happens. Most of the programs that are described in the text target adolescents. What should be done to help prevent suicide in younger adolescents and children?

Answer the question "What is the probability that someone you know will die from COVID-19 this year?" and give your opinion. Hint: You take for example the region where you live, the number of confirmed cases in this region and the population. N represents the total number of cases infected in the region, and p is the probability of death in Lebanon. You calculate the P(X=1).
