Design confounds are extraneous variables that influence both the independent variable and the dependent variable in an experimental study. The influence of these variables compromise the validity of the experimental study.

Confounding variables damage the internal validity of an experiment. Confounding variables can introduce biases and show correlation between variables that perhaps doesn’t exist.

There may be other extraneous variables that are present in an experimental study, but do not necessarily effect the internal validity of the study and maybe controlled by the experimenter.
