compare and contrast the role and place for women in New England and the Chesapeake? Why were there such differences in women's experiences based on the region?
This is a US History question from chapters 2-3
Women in the Chesapeake region tended to have more power because they were fewer in number and thus began from a better bargaining position. The New England colonies had a more diverse economy which included shipping, lumber, and export of food crops. On the other hand, the Chesapeake colonies economy focused almost exclusively on the production and export of tobacco and a few other cash crops. The men were in charge of ensuring that the child had a good life, education, marriage arrangement, and land when they were older. Men in New England had much more freedom. They were allowed to vote and own property. Women had to be completely subordinate to their husbands.Women sewed, cooked, and took care of the animals. They also taught the children about religion and moral values. If they didn't know how to do chores or raise their children, they were considered an outcast by society.
