The statute of limitations is a law that defines the maximum time that parties can take to file for legal proceedings from when a crime has been committed. This is applicable for both civil and criminal court cases. The stature of limitations differs from country to country as each country has different laws and a legal system. The time allowed to file a legal case depends on the magnitude of the crime.

For example if your doctor asked you to do a surgery and later you found out that there was no need for the medical procedure, you can file a case against the doctor for malpractise. However, there will be a time limit within which this needs to be done. If it is 5 years then the case needs to be filed within 5 years according to the stature of limitations.
