EXPLANATION: when we look at the spectra of more distant galaxies, we always find a shift towards longer wavelengths. This "redshift" is small for relatively nearby galaxies but gets larger and larger as we look at more and more distant galaxies. If we interpret the spectral shift in wavelengths in the same way that we normally do, this must mean that most of the galaxies in the Universe are moving away from us and that the further galaxies are away from us, the faster they are moving away from us.
