An exponential increase in how much data can be easily stored has enabled an exponential increase in program complexity. The physical limit of how much data can be written on a given medium has greatly constrained what is possible with modern computers. Computer complexity has advanced in short bursts of activity directly related to new advances in storage capability followed by a long lull until the next breakthrough. Computer technology improvements are largely independent of the physics of data storage. Cloud is not just making data storage easier and more convenient – it’s providing a platform for the businesses and services building the next era of computing.
