A black hole is an object that is so dense that light can not escape its surface. There are basically two parts of the black hole

  • Singularity : It is a one dimensional point which contains huge mass in an infinitely small space.
  • Event Horizon: It is not a material surface but a mathematical boundary surrounding the singularity point of black hole whose radius is equal to Schwarzschild radius.

The radius at which a mass has an escape velocity equal to the speed of light is called the Schwarzschild radius.

Therefore, at event horizon of a black hole, the escape velocity is equal to the velocity of light.

Note: Any object whose radius is less than the Schwarzschild radius will be a black hole. In other words, any object whose escape velocity is greater than the speed of light will be a black hole.
