Sonar means Sound Navigation and Ranging.

So basically Sonar can be understood by using the properties of the waves and specifically by sound waves.

It is based on the principle of reflection of waves and Doppler effect.

That is when any sound waves are produced by the source then that waves propagates through the medium and when they are encountered with any obstacle they will be reflected back and can be detected at the detector. So by measuring the time gap between emission and detection of sound distance of obstacle can be calculated. And by measuring the change in the frequency of wave motion of the obstacle can be calculated.
