Your team of five Mars explorers is returning to your base from a geological survey of an interesting but distant Martian region. The trip will take 24 hours at the speed of your vehicle. Just before starting back, you discover that the tanks storing liquid oxygen for your very efficient life support system have been damaged. Only 10 kilograms of oxygen remain after you’ve stopped the leak. There is no onboard equipment to generate new oxygen and there is no chance of rescue or resupply from your base. What do you do?

Answer #1

Since there is only 0.1 % of oxygen in the martian atmosphere and there is not enough oxygen molecules in the space this is is very much difficult to get breathable oxygen in such a situation.

My idea is that in such a situation one thing that can be done is the the drinking water the astronauts make with the condensate of the atmosphere can be electrolysed to get Oxygen. It also gives a dangerous by product, i.e. Hydrogen which must be released into the space immediately.
