  1. John is trying to find solace in the hell that is Prom by finding a spot where the sound from the speakers interferes destructively. After several minutes of searching, he’s found a spot! If there are two speakers that are 10 meters from one another, and John’s spot is 12 meters directly in front of one of the speakers, what is the wavelength of the sound? (Use m = 0 & Assume the speakers are emitting identical frequencies)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

for destructive interference

d = (m + 1/2)

where d is path length difference

distance of John from one speaker = 12 m

and distance of John from other speaker = sqrt ( 122 + 102) = 15.6 m

so,

15.6 - 12 = (m + 1/2)

3.62 = (m + 1/2)

put m = 0

3.62 = 1/2 *

= 7.24 m

1. A howler monkey is the loudest land animal and, under some circumstances, can be heard up to a distance of 6.78 km. Assume the acoustic output of a howler to be uniform in all directions and that the threshold of hearing is 1.0 × 10^12 W/m2. The acoustic power, in mW, emitted by the howler is closest to 2. The sound from a single source can reach point O by two different paths. One path is 19.9 m long...
