Using your intuition about entropy and its simple
definition of ‘degree of disorder’, explain whether the entropy
increases or decreases for each of the following processes and
why:
Melting ice
Precipitation of a solid from a liquid
solution
Smoothing of rocks in a river
Raindrop formation
Dissolving salt in water
melting ice:: the entropy is increases as water molecules are more free to move in liquid state than solid ice state so there will be more randomness in liquid state
Precipitation of solid from liquid:: this is a kind of phase change so in liquid phase there is more disorder than solid so the entropy will decrease
smoothing of rocks in the river:: am not sure about this bus in smoothing process entropy should decrease as the rocks became less resistance after smoothing
Rain drop formation::the entropy should decreas because of the state changes from vapour to liquid there will be more disorder in vapour state than liquid
Dissolving solt in water::the entropy will increase beacouse the solt ion will be free in the water and have more disorder than before
