Question

Separation Process:

Suppose a saturated liquid feed of a benzene (B)/toluene (T) mixture (50 mol% B) to a column is to be separated into a high purity distillate that is has a mole fraction of B equal to 0.9999 with a bottoms product mole fraction of 0.10. You may take the relative volatility to be aBT = 2.49 at the temperature that the column is operated. You are also given the reflux ratio to be 10.0, assuming a total condenser. Use a graphical solution up to 95 mol% B and then use the Kremser equation for the rest of the calculation.

Please show steps.

Answer #1

First of all I did n't get what to find from the above given information.but i'm proceeding this question as to find out the theoritical number of stages required for the seperation.and the kremser equations are only used to find the number theoritical stages in absorption but the operation here discribed is distillation i want complete question what to be find out.

ok you asked the steps .....

the information provided in the question are as folows

top distillate fraction(say xD):0.9999

bottom distillate fraction(say xW):0.10

relative volatility:2.49

reflux ratio(R):10

since the value of relative volatility is >1 we can say that the seperation can be achieved.

A mixture, F, of 620 lbmol/h of 46 mol% benzene (B) and 54 mol%
toluene (T) is separated continuously into two products. One
product, the distillate , is 98 mol% benzene. The other product,
the bottoms , is 95 mol% toluene. Compute the flow rates of these
two streams in: (a) lbmol/h, and (b) kmol/h. Calculate the fraction
of the benzene fed to the unit that is recovered in the
distillate.

A mixture of Mol-100 kmol containing 70% benzene and 30% toluene
must be separated at a total pressure of 101.325 KPA (1 atm). A
differential distillation column and an equilibrium(flash)
distillation column are available in the enterprise to perform this
operation. If 45 kmol distillate (top product) is obtained; a -)
the composition of the distillate and remaining liquid obtained by
differential distillation, B -) determine the composition of
distillate and liquid obtained from equilibrium distillation. What
distillation process would...

A distillation column should separate benzene and toluene in a

feed has a boiling point of 95 °C. Calculate flow rates of
distillate and bottom product . determine the number of ideal trays
needed for the separation . Where is the feed tray...

A liq mixture of benzene-toluene is to be distilled in a
fractionating tower at 101.3 kPa pressure. The feed of 100 kg mol/h
is liq and it contains 45 mole % benzene and 55 mole % toluene and
enters at 327.6 K (130 ◦F). A distillate containing 95
mole % benzene and 5 mole % toluene and a bottoms containing 10
mole % benzene and 90 mole % toluene are to be obtained. The reflux

1. The liquid product
from a flash distillation has a mole fraction of the more volatile
component that is lower than the specified liquid purity. Should we
decrease, increase, or hold constant the vapor molar flowrate to
meet the specified liquid purity? Draw a sketch and explain
why?
2. If the
reflux ratio increases, do the molar flowrates for the distillate,
bottoms, reflux, and overhead vapor decrease, stay the same, or
increase? Support your answer.
