Contrast the relative magnitudes of the entropy transfer vs. entropy production in the following processes:
a. A thermally insulated container has two compartments of equal size. Initially one side is filled with a gas and the other is evacuated. A valve is opened and the gas expands to fill both compartments.
b. A gas contained in a steel cylinder is slowly expanded to twice its volume.
Hi here is the solution for your question. I hope I could help you in future also. If anything is not clear to you please let me know before giving your valuable feedback.
I would like to improve that in the future.
Thanks
Solution
In the first case entropy change will be due to entropy production. Because it is given that it is thermally insulated system it means no heat can enter or leave the system so there will be no transfer of entropy also.
In second case cylinder is slowly expanded it means here expansion process will be slow so it will result in to decrease in dissipate effects and it will be compensated by production of entropy. But this value will be very small because of slow process. So most of the entropy change will be due to transfer of entropy.
I hope it will help you. If I missed anything please let me know before giving your rating.
