Why extraction is preferred to distillation? And What are the situations where extraction can be used instead of distillation?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Both are physical seperation process which is most commonly used of equal importance.

To extract pure form of solvent we can use liq - liq extraction of multiple stages where as in distillation heating is used.

Extraction is preferred over distillation for seperation application that would not be cost effective or inefficient to extract the pure component.

Field of application of extraction:highly thermaly senitive components, seperation of azeotropic mixtures, extraction of component present in electrolytic solution.

The comparison of the "greenness" of the two extraction procedures used for extracting essential oil from cloves is not as straightforward as one may initially think. Consider as least three of the 12 green chemistry principles and discuss the positive and negative attributes of steam distillation versus liquid CO2 extraction. Assume the goal is to isolate the essential oil to be used in aromatherapy and that separation of the components is not necessary.

You will use a simple distillation to isolate the product mixture in the dehydration reaction. Then you will separate the water from the alkene products by extraction using ether as your extraction solvent, dry the ether, and evaporate the ether to prepare your alkene mixture for analysis. Would it be useful at this point to do a second simple distillation to try to isolate each of the alkene products before analysis so that you can analyze each product separately rather...
