DISCUSSION- PRODUCTION THEORY First, the idea that firms (and individuals) should make decisions on how they optimize "on the margin" (where MC=MR). Often people get confused and think about making decisions based on the average (such as average total cost). Average total cost includes FIXED costs, which are sunk and should not influence future decisions. Second, the idea of diminishing marginal returns. That's the idea that each additional unit provides less benefit than the previous unit consumed. Use these concepts...

To be effective, “managers implement six management functions as they carry out the process of management”; the first of these processes is the Planning function. “This function requires the manager to set a direction and determine what needs to be accomplished. It means setting priorities and determining performance targets” (Longest et al., 2000). As you can see, planning is also something that relates to the household setting. It is often said that a household is actually a small business. Consider...

Will you use sensitivity analysis? Scenario analysis? Some other method? Will you utilize nonfinancial people to help with the analysis? If so, whom and why? Craft a memo to the CEO (Dr. Stephanie Yates) to answer these questions. Provide as much detail as possible to assure...

You are CEO of a major U.S. humanitarian organization. Your team primarily sends financial AID to the schools in developing countries to provide better education for children. Your organization considers sending substantial financial AID to a school in country X. Your job is to evaluate the school to find out if it qualifies to receive AID. Upon your inspection you realize that girls in that school are forced into marriage against their will as young as 10 or 11 y.o....

Topic Often times there are so many variables involved in a study that it is difficult to distinguish "causes". For example, there is the belief that "smoking causes lung cancer". I tend to believe this myself but my own mother was a chain smoker and never developed lung cancer. There are many other variables that might affect the outcome of lung cancer such as working conditions, heredity, diet, etc. It is too hard to account for every "factor" in these...

Discuss the idea that “Monopolies are bad for social welfare, compared to perfect competition”. Do you agree or disagree? Why? Are there times when your answer would be different? Given that for an industry to be perfectly competitive, the product must be identical across all providers, are they bad for private welfare? As you consider the perfectly competitive market structure versus monopolistic competition and oligopoly, would you rather have efficiency or variety? That is, one opportunity cost of the variety...

Psychological disorders are fascinating to most of us, as they are to those who have them -- and it's an unusual one of us who doesn't at times suspect we have a disorder ourselves (especially after studying Intro to Psych!). Consider Russell Crowe's powerful and heartbreaking depiction in A Beautiful Mind of Princeton Professor and Nobel Laureate John Nash who suffers with schizophrenia, or Jack Nicholson's sad portrayal of a romance fiction novelist with OCD in As Good as it...
