We’ve been learning about protected grounds and accommodation. A common scenario in workplaces is when an employee has a medical issue, and the employer must accommodate that medical issue to the point of undue hardship. Sometimes, employers do not know what information they can legitimately request from employees, and what information the employer has no right to know. Read Obtaining and Responding to Medical Information in the Workplace.
Does your workplace have a policy that deals with what information can be requested? Would you recommend changes to the policy? Why or why not?
Every organisation have their own policies regarding the information they need to collect from their employees. We have strict rules that only work related information must be collected . Generally employers collect information like parents, city, qualifications, blood group and any health issues . This information is stored in records for emergency purposes . These policies help to safeguard the privacy of the employee and also know the important information which might help in case of emergency. As long as the information is secured with high security and only work related information is collected, the policies need not be altered. But the feedback of employeesmust be taken on the type of information they are providing and their suggestions on the same.
