Road to accrediation -

The accreditation is typically a voluntary system funded by an NGO in which accredited external observers assess compliance with the health agency and compare it with a pre-established level of success.Accreditation is a quality control mechanism intended to ensure that a national standard is achieved by an education system. It encourages and supports the responsiveness of the program to the rapidly evolving world, ensuring that policies , processes and systems are in place to change continuously in response to student needs, increasing awareness and innovations in industry. The method of accreditation evaluation is fair and neutral and Canadian scholars have established the criteria.

JCAHO Accreditation and Quality of Care for Acute Myocardial Infarction-

The Joint Health Care Accreditation Commission (JCAHO) is a non-profit public body leading in the nation's accreditation of hospitals. Accreditation of the JCAHO is essential for hospitals as Medicare Act of 1965 defined the federal health and safety standards required for participation in Medicare to be recognized as having been met by accredited hospitals. The accreditations for JCAHO are also used as "price assurance third-party accreditation" for marketing purposes, and as a result, about 80% of the 6,000 US hospitals have obtained the accreditation of JCAHO.

JCAHO Accreditation – An assessment committee that evaluates hospital procedures, performs interviews and reviews medical records for the enforcement with requirements in 450 results areas is visiting a hospital seeking JCAHO Accreditation every three years. For each performance class, JCAHO surveyors allocate a score and assess a "accredit rating" based on the general score of the facility, and whether JCAHO has indicated particular areas of improvement (e.g. TypeI guidelines, suggesting a need for insatisfactory enforcement resolving).

Throughout our time of review, the JCAHO accreditation rates were accredited by (descending) recognition, accreditation without I recommendations(type I), accreditation with (type I) recommendations, conditional and non-accredited. Information from JCAHO on the level of hospital accreditation and overview information for hospitals between 1994 and 1998 were collected. Hospitals with no recorded synthesis or accreditation standard were not considered to have been tested.

Quality of care for acute myocardial infarction-

The relation between JCaHO hospital accreditation, the quality of care and survival of these hospitals among Medicare hospital patients for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction is examined. The standard (without the possibility of aspirin, beta-blocker and reperfuse therapy) of hospitals not surveyed by JCAHO was on average inferior to that of hospitals surveyed.

However, the quality of care and mortality of the surveyed hospitals in the accreditation categories were considerably different, indicating that JCAHO accreditation rates are of little value in the distinguishing of individual performance between accredited hospitals. Such results support existing attempts to include quality of treatment in decisions surrounding accreditation.A higher JCAHO standard of accreditation did not automatically mean better treatment or enhanced outcomes for AMI management.

Does accreditation impact quality?

There are clear reports that accreditation services enhance the health care process. There is ample evidence that accreditation services improve the clinical outcomes of a wide variety of clinical conditions. As a tool to increase the quality of health care, accreditation programs should be sponsored.

Are there less errors in hospitals that are accredited?

High-quality care causes fewer errors and less harm than low-quality care. Quality improvement (QI) aims to shift the entire quality curve to the right and increase the height of the right-hand tail (more truly excellent care). Patient safety improvement is quality improvement focused on lowering or truncating the lower tail of the quality distribution. Both kinds of improvement are needed, and both improve safety for patients, but their focus is different.

Both stakeholders are entitled to accreditation. The biggest beneficiary is patients. High quality of care and patient health are the products of accreditation. Patients seek treatment from medical professionals. Patients' interests are protected and safeguarded. Continuous evaluation of patient satisfaction is done. The workers in an accredited health organization are very happy as they provide for a continuous research, a healthy working atmosphere, leadership and above all control of clinical processes. The organisation's contribution to quality care can be illustrated. It boosts public confidence in the healthcare organization's programs. It also helps the healthcare team to take the correct measurements.

What is the value of accreditation?

"A public recognition of the achievement of accreditation standards by a healthcare organisation, demonstrated through an independent external peer assessment of that organisation's level of performance in relation to the standards".
