If businesses act in a socially responsible manner only when it benefits them, while avoiding costlier changes, are they really being socially responsible?

Answer #1

No, the entire process of being socially responsible also revolves around the process of the understanding of ethics and how each and every decision a company makes affects it. We can say that when a company decides to become socially responsible only when the costs are minimal and in the eyes of the society, they are not being socially responsible. It is more as if they are taking a business decision nor an ethical or socially responsible one. In this regard, we can say that this might be beneficial for them in the short run, but, as far as the long-term consequences go, a company cannot sustain this behavior since the basic assumption of social responsibility revolves around ethicality and how society perceives the changes to be in response to the environment.

Answer the case study questions please. While attending college, I spent a few years working at a used-textbook store. The majority of the books we sold were purchased from students, individuals, and used-book wholesalers. Sometimes, when putting books out on the shelves, I would encounter books with phrases like “Instructor’s Copy” or “Sample Copy—Not for Resale” printed on the covers. When I asked my boss about these books, he told me that they were free copies given out to instructors,...

A firm considering foreign expansion must first decide which markets to enter, when to enter them, and on what scale. Then the firm must decide on the entry mode. The firm's strategy, product, and competition all play parts in making that decision. When a firm's competitive advantage is based on technological competence, a wholly owned subsidiary will often be the preferred entry mode because it reduces the risk of losing control over that competence. A wholly owned subsidiary is also...

When Howard Schultz founded Starbucks in 1987, he wanted to create a company that would genuinely care for the well-being of its employees. He had been very influenced by his memories of his father, noting that his father “struggled a great deal and never made more than $20,000 a year, and his work was never valued, emotionally or physically, by his employer … This was an injustice … I want our employees to know we value them.” He also believed...
