As discussed throughout the reading, the field of Human Resource Management is quite complex. During the first three classes, you have completed reading assignments that have provided you with an introduction to the field. As mentioned in the reading and course materials, there are several definitions of HRM and various subtopics of study are closely aligned with HRM (e.g., compensation, benefits, organizational development, training, etc.). This formal writing assignment is to be based upon course reading and individual research. The paper should include the following information: · - An introduction to the field of Human Resource Management. · T - Thorough information about how one researcher’s (i.e., Maslow, McGregor, Smith, Owen, etc.) studies contributed to the field of HRM. · - An explanation of how one of the subtopics of HRM is related to the field. o For example, if you choose the topic of compensation, explain its relationship to the field of HRM using a theory to support its relationship.
Introduction to Human Resource Management
In Simple terms, personnel involved in various activities of an organization are called as Human resources. The overall management of all the Human resources in the organization is called as Human Resource management.
Although organization aims to achieve its goals and objectives by effective mobilization of human resources, Human resources have a common motive .ie. People works for the organization to meet their personal goals and objectives. It is when organization is able to cater to the goals and objectives of the human resources in some way or the other; that the Human resources becomes effectively engaged with the organization
For the further discussion we shall take Maslow’s theory – the Hierarchy of Needs. We’ll see the relationship of Motivation to HRM through Maslow’s theory.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
1. Physiological Needs - basic issues of survival such as food, clothing etc.
2. Security Needs – a safe house, financial security, savings etc
3. "Belongingness" Needs – good social environment, social status, friends and well wishers , social image etc
4. Esteem Needs – awards and recognitions, fame, positions held in the society etc
5. Self-Actualization Needs - achievements, challenges in work and social life, identifying the reason for existence, being socially and morally responsible etc
Motivation
Everyone needs motivation to continue doing what they do or to exceed the expectations or taking up a highly aggressive target. Motivation can be monetary,(eg: high salary, bonuses, incentives etc) or non-monetary (promotion, appreciation, recognition, a challenging role etc)
Now what motivates a person today may not motivate him after a little while. The motivational factor keeps changing. It depends on which stage of life a person is and what are his/her current needs. It is directly linked to Maslow’s theory.. In the sense, what can motivate a person certainly depends on in which level in the hierarchy he/ she is and what sort of needs does he/she currently has. For example. Money cannot motivate someone who has earned enough for his/her lifetime.
I hope this short write up has helped you and has met your expectation.
