In the JIT theory, anything in the product development cycle that does not add value to the product is waste. Please give an example and briefly explain why each of the following are sources of waste:
a) Processing
b) Motion
c) Transportation
d) Defects 6
e) Waiting time
f) Overproduction
g) Inventory
Source of Waste |
Example and why source of waste? |
Processing |
For example component A requires 10 Qty, however, we have processed more quantities, here, extra quantities are not needed now, it could be used in future time. Extra quantities will consume/ block some area, there could be probability that such items can be missed if we don’t monitor them over time. Further, there can be blockage in inventory due to such extra quantities added; it has increased non necessary traffic. Hence, it can be considered as source of waste, we must take care off to control such quantities. |
Motion |
Workers should be engaged at their work to increase productivity and to help them get more focused on their core activities, for example: Rabin is responsible for drilling operations, if he puts more time on searching the materials, then, he can’t make more drilling in a day and his activities can be impacted due to such motion works. Hence, we should control such motion related works to minimize the loss. |
Transportation |
Some component items are manufactured by suppliers, such suppliers should be near by the parent company, otherwise, company may need the component items sooner basis, due to issues with transportation and distance, suppliers will not be able to deliver such component items in stipulated time. |
Defects |
Defects are also source of waste, for example, if we find defects in raw materials, then use the same raw materials, we will definitely get poor product, as defective inputs are integrated. So any defects should be eliminated from its earlier phase. |
Waiting Time |
The system could include more waiting time; it will bring poor satisfaction to the customers. For example: patients want to take doctor’s appointment and if they wait for long time, it will not only reduce their satisfaction level, it also brings health impact on them. Hence, waiting time should be reduced in the system to fight satisfaction issues. |
Overproduction |
Organization XYZ may produce more number of products beyond their needs, producing more products will increase their inventory volume, each product takes certain space and holding cost, there could be damage in the component due to holding such items, hence overproduction should be discouraged. |
Inventory |
Product or component or material inventory should be handled in effective way, any unnecessary consumption will block the place, and waiting time will be increased. Many processes are getting delayed as they put too much time in handling such inventories. Hence, we should control inventory to minimize the waste. |
