In case of superficial partial thickness burns, first check airway, breathing, circulation. Later do wound assessment.

  • clean the burnt area with normal saline or cool water for 10 minutes
  • Do not open the blister as it may increase the chance of infection.
  • Cover the burnt area with a sterile non adhesive bandage or a clean cloth or a sheet depending on what is available and how big the wound
  • Elevate burnt area above the level of heart to reduce inflammation.
  • Insert a two wide bore intravenous cannulas for fluid therapy
  • Assess the degree of burn and do fluid resuscitation based on modified parkland formula
  • Apply a antibiotic cream over burnt area (usually silver nitrate cream)
  • Put the patient on pain relief medication (usually combination of paracetamol and opioid)
