Select two challenges that could result from having too many systems and discuss impact on both the organization and also on care outcome and patients.

Answer #1

The challenges that could result from having too many systems such as more than one EMR in a single organization include the need to make those EMRs “talk to each other,” a considerable amount of IT work is necessary. This leads to an increase in the cost and the patient safety is at risk. Thus when considering the use of more than one EMR in organizations with multiple EMRs the same pressures that led to the addition of a second EMR may lead to the addition of other EMRs, which the marketplace is likely to produce over time. Thus; we need to balance between the appeal for newer systems and the cost of introducing additional EMRs into a single organization. Thus we have to ensure that the patient safety is not compromised by the introduction of these multiple systems, (Pyne, 2012).

Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of nature’s sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive. Of course, humans don’t fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular...

They are among the worst when it comes to maintaining hardened systems because they often feel that they are the exception to the rules. Executives can be difficult because they may believe that the organization should accommodate them (and not the other way around) and that security should not get in the way of business. IT people can be difficult because they may believe they know what they are doing and...
