The pharmacy technician received a physician’s order for one liter of Dextrose 15%. After searching the books and calling the manufacturer she realized that Dextrose is not made as 15%. She looked around and only found Dextrose 10% and Dextrose 50%. She did not waste time and called the prescriber asking him to change the order to 10%.
Did she do the right thing and why?
Dextrose is a prescription sterile non pyrogenic solution used for intravenous infusion for the treatment of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels.
Dextrose is universally available in 5%, 10% 25% and 50% but available as 15%.The pharmacy technician called and informed the prescriber regarding the availability is right but it's not pretty right to order a physician to change his prescription. Because there are chances that the patient is to be administered that particular dose. She has an option of giving one 10% Dextrose and one 5% Dextrose .
