Sarah, age 24, lives in Eastern Kentucky. She is a new mother of a 2-week-old little boy named Daniel. Since this is her first child and she is breast-feeding, she attends weekly breast-feeding support group at her local health department. You are doing home visits for high-risk mothers and infants. Sarah is concerned that Daniel has developed a rash all over him and isn't sleeping well. You note that Daniel is wearing a long-sleeved tee shirt and a flannel sleeper while Sarah is wearing a short-sleeved shirt, shorts and sandals. Sarah asks you to excuse her while she heats up a bottle of "catnip tea" for the baby.
As the RN, what assessments do you need to make regarding Daniel? How will you approach the "catnip tea"? What other issue/s should you address with Sarah?
Catnip tea only consumed by the adults unless doctor advice we
should not give for the babies. it sometimes treated colic for the
infant when it is given in the correct temperature. catnip is
unsafe for the children when it was taken by the mouth. it causes
various side-effects like stomach pain, irritability, and
sluggishness after consuming that. assess the child for stomach
upset and pain, watch the child respiration and for any CNS
reaction. assess the child's skin for cold and hot temperature and
assess the rashes for severity. for newborn babies unless otherwise
doctor advice we should not use the catnip tea. for safe use add
one-half cup of boiling water with 1/2tsp of catnip tea.pour to the
6tsp of tea into the baby. feeding bottle and tea should be tested
for the heat by shaking a few drops on the wrist. if it is hotter
than warm on the wrist.it will be too hot for the baby to wait
until the tea cools before giving to the baby.
Improve the Sarah knowledge about breastfeeding techniques and
improve the knowledge of colic soothing ideas for the baby. review
her diet pattern and advice to eliminate the food that causes
colic. advise Sarah not to stop breastfeeding and never use infant
formula at this age for the child. educate the mother about child
colic symptoms and remedies and approach to local health department
before using any remedies.
