Scenario 1: You are working as a waitress in a restaurant. You go to check on your table to see how their food is. As you are walking up to the table, one of the customers begins coughing. They suddenly stop coughing and start clutching their throat. Their lips begin to turn a bluish color and the family around the table begins to panic. You are first aid certified and want to help the victim. (1) What are the initial steps you would take in this situation? (2) Describe in detail how you would help the victim.

Scenario 1 Continued: As you are giving care to the choking victim, they become unresponsive and you determine that they no longer have a pulse. (1) Describe in detail how you would now care for the individual with the new information.

Scenario 2: You are at a family get-together when your aunt starts screaming for help. You run over to your aunt to see her holding her 8-month old baby. She tells you that the baby is choking on a toy from one of the older children and she needs help. She hands you the conscious baby and you notice her lips are turning blue. (1) What are the initial steps you would take in this situation? (2) Explain in detail how you would care for the choking infant.

Scenario 2 Continued: While you are caring for the infant, she becomes unconscious and she no longer has a pulse. (1) With this new information how would your care change? (2) Explain the new steps of care in detail.

Answer: The initial step to be take when someone turn bluish color is to prepared to perform abdominal thrust or Heimlich maneuver. And also advice the family member not to be panic.

Answer: For the removal of the choking particles, Heimlich maneuver should be perform. For this, the person who are going to give maneuver have to stand just behind the choking person, make the person lean forward, place the arms around the person's waist, make a fist and place it just above the navel of the person, grab the fist with other hand then forcefully push inward and upward at the same time. Repeat the same until the food is expelled.

Answer:If the patient become unresponsive and pulselesss then first call emergency services and check for the patency of airway or check for the fold of tongue inside the airway. Then start CPR. Before start CPR, place the patient in flat position with head turn side to make the secretion drain and prevent blocking of the airway. Start the CPR with the ration of 30 chest compression and 2 breaths through mouth. Continue CPR till the patient start breathing or till the emergency services are reach the area.

Answer: For the infant, the initial step to be perform for the infant with choking is back blow method. This method is use only for the infant less than 1 year.

Answer: In back blow method, the person who are going to perform the back blow should be sitting position and hold the baby with the baby's face downward and supporting the head with hand. Perform back blow in the back between the shoulder blade of the infant with the heel of the hand. Upto 5 back blows can be given.

Answer: For performing the CPR for infant. Place the infant in flat area in supine position. Provide 30 chest compression and 2 breath through nose and mouth together. For the chest compression, place the two fingers ( index and middle) in the middle of the chest just below the imaginary line between the two breast nipple and give the compression. Then give 2 breath by chin lift method through mouth and while giving breath both mouth and nose should be covered by the mouth of the provider. Continue till the infant resume breathing.
