Introduce variables to represent items of interest in the problem. For
example, (1) Let n be the number to be found, or (2) Let a be Alice’s
current age, or (3) Let r be the rate of the first car.
(2) Write down an equation using the information given in the problem. This
is the really important part for this particular assignment!
(3) Solve the equation and find the value requested in the problem.
One angle in a triangle is twice as large as the smallest angle,
and the another angle is three times as large as the smallest
angle. How large are the three angles?
A book and a magazine were purchased for a total of $20. If the
book cost four times as much as the magazine, how much did
each cost?
One angle in a triangle is twice as large as the smallest
angle,
and the another angle is three times as large as the smallest
angle. How large are the three angles?
Soln :
Let the smallest angle be 'a'
One angle is twice this, as in another angle = 2*a = 2a
Third angle is thrice as large as the smallest, so 3a
So, the three angles are
a , 2a , 3a
We know that :
a + 2a + 3a = 180
6a = 180
a = 30
So, the angles are
30 , 30*2 , 30*3
30 , 60 and 90

2)
Book cost = b
Magazine cost = m
Together they cost 20$
So, b + m = 20
book costs 4 times as much as the mag
So, b = 4m
So, plugging that in, we have :
4m + m = 20
5m = 20
m = 4
And thus book, b = 4*4 =16
Cost of book = 16$
Cost of mag = $4
