What powers should a governor have in order to perform his or her job well in today’s economic and political environment? Have we learned any lessons from the pandemic that could or should affect the roles and responsibilities of the top elected official in a state. Also, should there be a different set of guiding principles (balance of power) between governors and other officials at the state level and those in local municipalities?
Please refrain from making this a referendum on any particular governor/state and rather focus on what positive steps we can take in a broader sense. You don't have to address all of these topics but rather offer your thoughts on one aspect of this debate.
HIghlight positive changes that could/should be considered regarding the roles and responsibilities of governors (lessons learned from the pandemic).
First, Governor acts as an agent of the Central Government, which is the fact. So as the centre asks him to do he'd do the same. That is the reality.
According to my opinion, more powers should be vested in the executive officials rather than the Governor of the state. In an ethical manner, Governor should be neutral when it comes to his political view. He shouldn't support one party ( which is the ruling party or the opposition party). In today's scenario, Governors are misusing their powers at a different level. Economic conditions of a state should never be observed by the Governor of a state.
