Evo Morales, an indigenous leader of the leftist Movement towards socialism (MAS) party, won the election in December 18, 2005, with 54% of votes. He developed a policy "coca yes, cocaine no" policy for Bolivia based on the principles of the Chapare Agreement. U.S interest in Bolivia was traditionally centred on its role as a coca producers and its relationship with Colombia and Peru, the two other major coca and cocaine producers In the Andes. Some US officials have stated that democracy in Bolivia could be at riak because of measures taken by President Morales to undercut the opposition and eliminate checks on his authority.
