Q1.)What are DHCP filters and how do they operate work on a network using Windows Server 2016?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol used to automate the process of configuring devices on IP networks, thus allowing them to use network services such as DNS, NTP, and any communication protocol based on UDP or TCP.

DHCP filtering provides security by filtering untrusted DHCP messages. An untrusted message is a message that is received from outside the network or firewall that can cause traffic attacks within network.

It works by allowing the administrator to configure each port as a trusted or untrusted port. The port that has the authorized DHCP server has been configured as a trusted port. Any DHCP responses received on a trusted port will be forwarded and rest of the ports would be configured as untrusted.

Managing a Windows Server 2016 DHCP server:

configuring and managing a DHCP server depend on the network operating system or router you’re using.

The following points describe how to work with a DHCP server in Windows Server 2016.

1.If you haven’t installed the DHCP server on the server, install it using the Server Manager (click Server Manager in the task bar, and then use Add Roles and Features to add the DHCP role). Once the DHCP server role is installed, we can manage it by opening the DHCP management console. To open this console, open System Manager and choose Tools → DHCP.

2.To start with a DHCP server, we must create at least one scope. We can create a scope by using the New Scope Wizard, which we start by selecting the server we want to create the scope on and then clicking New Scope. The wizard asks for the essential info required to define the scope, including the scope’s name, its starting and ending IP addresses, and the subnet mask.

3.We can also specify any IP addresses we want to exclude from the scope, the lease duration, the IP address of our gateway router, the domain name for our network, and the IP addresses for the DNS servers we want the client computers to use.

Q2.)What is the "preference value" used to indicate when configuring DHCPv6 scopes and what does a preference value of zero mean?

The preference value is used to indicate the priority when there are multiple DHCPv6 servers.

Higher preference value indicates higher priority. The default value is 0,that means no preference value sholud be included in the message as the preference value is optional in DHCPv6 message.

If the preference value is included and the DHCPv6 client receives multiple repiles from multiple servers,it chooses the reply with the highest priority but if the preference value is same ,the client chooses the reply with the best configuration options.

Q3.)What must be done to a Windows Server before it can assign IPv6 addresses via DHCPv6?

Before Window server 2016 begins assigning IPv6 addresses via DHCPv6, you must assign a static IPv6 address to the server, using the same prefixyou do forthe DHCPv6 scope.
