You’re on a jobsite pouring concrete and your mix begins to set up suddenly and unexpectedly. List two ways you can determine if you’re having false set vs. having flash set.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. Plasticity- In false set Plasticity can be regained by further mixing. Flash set is also the rapid development of rigidity, but with the evolution of considerable heat. Plasticity cannot be regained. So if in further mixing of concrete plasticity is regained that means it is false set, if not then flash set.

2. Temperature- If you are familiar with the temperature of your concrete during normal hydration, you should be able to distinguish between the two types of set. Flash set generates a higher temperature within the concrete than does false set.

The night before your birthday in 2007 you set up your telescope on a nearby mountaintop. It was a clear night, and you had a stroke of luck: At 12:30 A.M. you spotted a new comet. After repeating the observation on successive nights, you were able to calculate its solar system coordinates p_0 = (x_0, y_0, z_0) and its velocity vector v_0 = (v_x0, v_y0, v_z0) on that first night. Using this information, determine the following: 1. the comet's perihelion...
