In a city A with a population of 2 million, every person produces 3 kg of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day. The percentage of the recyclable waste is 50% of the total waste. The rest of the waste goes to the landfill. Assume that the specific weight of uncompacted MSW is 100 kg/m3 and the specific weight of MSW in landfill is 550 kg/m3.
What would be the landfill volume required for 5 years?
Solution) As given in the question we have to calculate the volume required for landfill for 5 years which is calculated as follows-
Total population - 2000,000
Waste per capita per day - 3 kg
No. Of days in 5 years - 5 x 365
Thus total waste produced is = 2000000 x 3 x 5 x 365
= 10950000000 kg
Half of the waste get recycled thus waste going to landfill = 10950000000/2
=5475000000kg
As overtime the waste is placed over top of the previous waste the waste underneath gets compacted thus usung specific weight for compacted MSW
Thus the volume of landfill = Total waste / Specific weight of MSW
=5475000000/550
=9.95 x 106 m3
Thus is the volume of landfill that is required for a period of 5 years.
