explain inter molecular fr observation I2 in H2O and hexane and ethanol

Homework Answers

Answer #1

I2 is non-polar molecule

We know that like dissolves like that means polar compounds disolve in polar solvents & non-polar compounds dissolve in non-polar solvents

Water is a polar solvent .When dissolving I2 in water(having dipole moment) an induced dipole moment is created in I2 so the molecular forces are dipole- induced dipole interactions.

Hexane non-polar organic solvent I2 is soluble in hexane & the type of intermolecular forces are vanderwall's forces
Ethanol is also a polar solvent, here also the molecular forces are dipole- induced dipole interactions.
