Does your IR spectrum allow you to confirm that the structure of the product is a combination of the rwo reactants?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

IR spectrum allows you to conform that the structure is combination of products and reactants.

Example: if u take the IR of product form the reactants maleic anhydride and antracene, the product spectrum yeilds peaks at 3073. 89 cm-1 and 2969.8 cm-1. These indicated the presence of benzene rings and were comparable to peaks at 3047.47 cm-1 and 2924.78cm-1 and 2856.1 cm-1 on the antracene spectrum.

The product IR spectrum also contains peaks at 1862.45 cm-1 and 1782.34 cm-1.These peaks indicated the presence of carbonyl group, and were comparable to the peaks located at 1850.1 cm-1, 1778.9 cm-1 on the maleic anhydride spectrum. Because the product spectrum shares similarities with the both maleic anhydride spectruma and anthracene spectrum, it can be concluded that the product is combination of two reactants.

A compound, C10H14, shows an IR peak at 745 cm-1. Its 1H NMR spectrum has peaks at delta 7.18 (4 H, broad singlet), 2.70 (4 H, quartet, J=7 Hz), and 1.20 (6 H, triplet, J=7 Hz). Draw its structure in the window below. You do not have to consider stereochemistry. You do not have to explicitly draw H atoms. In cases where there is more than one answer, just draw one.
