Write a molecular equation for the precipitation reaction that occurs (if any) when the following solutions are mixed. If no reaction occurs, write NOREACTION.

potassium carbonate and lead(II) nitrate

aluminum iodide and lead(II) acetate

copper(II) nitrate and sodium sulfate

strontium nitrate and sodium sulfate

Homework Answers

Answer #1

potassium carbonate and lead(II) nitrate:

K2CO3 (aq) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) ..................> PbCO3 (s) + 2 KNO3 (aq)

this is precipitation reaction as PbCO3 is precipitated.

aluminum iodide and lead(II) acetate:

2 AlI3 (aq) + 3 Pb(CH3COO)2 (aq) .......................> 3 PbI2 (s) + 2 Al(CH3COO)3 (aq)

this is precipitation reaction as PbI2 is precipitated.

copper(II) nitrate and sodium sulfate: No reaction.

Here both products are soluble in water. so reaction can not occurs.

strontium nitrate and sodium sulfate:

Sr(NO3)2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) .................> SrSO4 (s) + 2 NaNO3 (aq)

this is precipitation reaction as SrSO4 is precipitated.
