Arrange the following atoms in order of increasing electron affinity: C, F, Ne, O

Which of the following has the largest first ionization energy? Nitrogen, Phosporus, Arsenic, Antimony

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Electron affinity: Defined as negative of electron gain enthalpy.

electron gain enthalpy: The amount of energy released when an electron is added to the outer most orbit a neutral gaseous atom in its ground state.

order of increasing electron affinity : Ne < C < O < F.

Ionization energy ; The amount of energy required to remove electron from the outer most orbit of neutral gaseous atom in its ground state.

Largest ionization energy of N, P, As and Sb. among them N has the highest ionization energy.

Increasing order : Sb < As < P < N
