What are two properties of water, in comparison to other liquids, that make it ideal as a reservoir in which organic self-assembly could occur?

Answer #1

1. Heat of vaporization: Due to the presence of hydrogen bonding the heat of vaporization is much larger than heat of fusion. This is very important property from physiology perspective as humans/animals cannot easily loose water from their body and survives.

2. density: Water density decreases upon freezing, but it will have a maximum density at 4 oC (3.98 oC accurately), so that ice will float on water making water livings are safe. Water also has higher capacity of dissolving oxygen gas makes it more friendly to aquatic animals like fish.

What two liquids when mixed occupy less combined volume than the sum of their individual volumes (at room temp, sea-level pressure)? I've heard that mixing 1 unit volume of water with one unit volume of antifreeze occupies less than 2 units of combined volume. Is this true? What is the shrinkage?

Suppose that there are two very large reservoirs of water, one at a temperature of 87.0 ∘C and one at a temperature of 19.0 ∘C. These reservoirs are brought into thermal contact long enough for 40210 J of heat to flow from the hot water to the cold water. Assume that the reservoirs are large enough so that the temperatures do not change significantly. What is the total change in entropy, Δ?tot, resulting from this heat exchange between the hot...
