The equilibrium constant KP for the reaction CCl, (g) C(s) 2Cl2(g) at 700°C is 0.72. Determine the initial pressure of carbon tetrachloride that will produce a total equilibrium pressure of 2.10 atm at 700 C. Pressure atm

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given-

The equilibrium constant Kp for the reaction at 700°C is 0.72

Total equilibrium pressure of 2.10 atm

Determine the initial pressure of carbon tetrachloride that will produce a total equilibrium pressure of 2.10 atm at 700°C -

CCl4 ===> C + 2Cl2

Initial x     0        0

Change -p           +2p

Equil x-p             2p

x-p = 2.10

0.72 = pCl2^2/pCCl4 = 2p^2/2.10

2p^2 = 2.10 x 0.72 = 1.512

P^2 = 0.756

P = 0.8694

x = p+2.10

x = 0.8694 + 2.10 = 2.9694

The initial pressure of carbon tetrachloride is 2.97 atm.
