what is the product separation scheme of toluene using Friedel-crafts acylation produce 4 -methyl acetophenone using aluminum chloride and CH2Cl2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Friedel-Crafts acylation of toluene results into 4-methyl acetophenone.

After the reaction, the reaction mixture is pured into ice and concentrated HCl solution.

Transfer to separatory funnel.

Separate the organic CH2Cl2 layer from aqueous layer.

Transfer organic layer back to separatory funnel and wash with aqueous NaHCO3 solution.

Wash with water

Dry the organic layer over anhydrous MgSO4 in a erlenmeyer flask.

Filter the solution. Remove solvent on rotary evaporator to get the final crude product.

Fractional distillation yields the pure product.

I need to do an extraction experiment with a mixture of 50% phenanthrene, 40% methyl 4-aminobenzoate and 10% 1,4-dibromobenzene. What solvent should I use? I was thinking about using diethyl ether. After extraction, I plan on doing crystallization with the organic layer using hot ethanol. Solvents available: diethyl ether, 95% ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, hexane, toluene, methylene chloride, and anhydrous sodium sulfate. Which one?
