You combine the two following substances in 1.0 L of water.

1.0 mol NH3, 1.0 mol HCl

NH3: Kb = 1.8 * 10-5

Which of the following descibes the resulting solution?

A

An acidic solution that is not a buffer

B

An acidic buffer solution

C

A neutral solution that is not a buffer

D

A basic solution that is not a buffer

E

A neutral buffer solution

F

A basic buffer solution

The answer is A but i'm not sure why.

Answer #1

answer : An acidic solution that is not a buffer

NH3 + HCl --------------------> NH4Cl

1.0          1.0                                  0   --------------> initial

0           0                                  1.0 -----------------> after reaction.

so after reaction NH4Cl only remains . it is acidic salt becuase of it is the salt of weak base and strong acid.acidic character is dominent . but it is not buffer ..
