2. Are the aqueous solutions of following chemicals acidic, basic, or neutral? (a) NH4NO3 : (b) Na2O : (c) KNO2 : (d) SO3 : (e) NH4C2H3O2 (Ka(HC2H3O2) = 1.8 10-5 , Kb(NH3) = 1.8 10-5 ):
(a) NH4NO3 is a salt formed from weak base NH4OH & strong acid HNO3 so the salt is acidic in nature
(b) Na2O is basoc in nature since it contains strong basic part of NaOH
(c) KNO2 is a salt formed from weak acid HNO2 & strong base KOH so the salt is basic in nature
(d) SO3 is acidic in nature since S is electron deficient in its octet
(e) NH4C2H3O2 (Ka(HC2H3O2) = 1.8 x 10-5 , Kb(NH3) = 1.8 x10-5 )
Ka of NH4+ is Ka = Kw / Kb
= ( 1.0x10-14) / (1.8 x10-5)
= 5.56x10-10
Since the value of Ka of (HC2H3O2) is more so the solution of NH4C2H3O2 is acidic in nature
