What is the separation scheme when 50 mg of a solid has 2.0 mL of CH2Cl2 and 2.0 mL of H2O to it. After the layers separate, the bottom organic layer is transferred to another vial. Na2SO4 is added and then it is dried in an N-Evap.
1. 50 mg of the solid should take in a vial and add 2 ml of CH2Cl2 (Dichloro methane) and dissolve fully (or stirr for some time).
2. Take the solution in a seperating funnel and add water to the solution and shake well. so that the water soluble material will go in to the water layer.
3. Seperate the bottom organic layer (density of dichloromethane is higher than water so it will come bottom)
4. to the organic layer add little Na2SO4 (anhydrous sodium sulphate). this is for removing traces of water in the organic layer.
5. Then evoperate the organic layer using a evaporater and collect the solid.
by this seperation we can remove the water soluble impurity or materials from the solid.
