What is the molality of a solution containing 2 mL of isopropyl alcohol and 10.0 mL of distilled water?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

volume of isopropyl alcohol = 2 ml

density of alcohol = 0.786 g/ml

mass of isopropyl alcohol = 2x0.786 = 1.572 grams( solute)

molar mass of isopropyl alcohol = 60.1 g/mole

number of moles of isopropyl alcohol = mass/molar mass = 1.572/60.1 = 0.026 moles

volume of water = 10.0ml

density of water = 1.0g/ml

mass of 10.0 ml o fwater = 10.0x1.0 = 10.0 grams ( solvent)

mass of water = 10.0grams = 0.01 kg

Molality = number of moles of solute/mass of solvent in kg

Molality = 0.026/0.01 = 2.6 m
