Identify a good buffer.
A) A significant amounts of both a weak acid and its conjugate base
B) SIgnificant amounts of both a strong acid and a strong base
C) Small amounts of both a weak acid and its conjugate base
D) Significant amounts of both a weak acid and a strong base
E) SMall amounts of both a strong acid and a strong base.
I know the correct answear is A but why it A correct while the others are wrong. Could someone explain to me why B-E are the wrong answears?
acidic buffer is formed by weak acid and its conjugate
base
basic buffer is formed by weak base and its conjugate
acid
option B,D,E are ruled out since they are not even forming buffer
Now we need to decide between A and C
If amount are present in small quantity, sall amount of base will
react with this acid and pH will change. So it will not be a good
buffer since whole concept of buffer is to now allow change in pH.
So option C is also not going to work
Answer: A
