Question

list three unique properties of water?

list three unique properties of water?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) Water has an unusual ability to dissolve other substances.

2) It has an anomalously high dielectric constant.

3) It has the ability to form colloidal sols.

4) The density of water increases as it is cooled to 4 degrees C and then its density begins to decrease as the temperature decreases to 0 degrees C, the freezing point of water. As the freezing point is approached, hydrogen bonds relax and form a crystal lattice that keeps molecules further apart than they are in liquid water. This is the reason why ice floats and ponds don't freeze solid.

Substances that are gases at room temperature have unique properties compared to liquids and solids. Some gases occur naturally in our atmosphere, and other gases are added to the environment. For example, chlorodifluoromethane (CHClF2) is a gas used as a refrigerant from about 1930 until the entire class of Freon gases were banned in 1987 by the Montreal Protocol.   -Choose a substance that’s a gas a room temperature. -Determine its density at room temperature (look up or calculate). -Describe its...
