I am to separate the constituents of an impure compound containing pthalic acid, benzophenone and glycine in a recrystallization lab in o chem.
I've attempted the experiment once already. I started with the use of cold water to dissolve glycine. i removed that layer and then added boiling water to the rest to dissolve pthalic acid.
this didn't work very well. all substances are very impure according to the IR

Answer #1

after removal of glycine frim mixture using cold water add little amount of sodium bicarbonate in hot water containing phthalic acid and benzophenone and then add organic solvent such as Ethylacetate or Dichloromethane the Benzophenone layer will come in organic phase while Phthalic acid will come in aqueous layer as bicarbonate. Then add smount of Hydrochloric acid and make the solution neutral and extract phthalic acid with organic solvent from aqueous phase.
