a blood concentration of 0.065 M ethyl alcohol is sufficient induce a coma. at this concentration , what is the total mass of alcohol in grams in an adult male whose total blood volume is 5.6L?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Here we have given the concentration of ethyl alcohol 0.065 M,

i.e we know the molarity , from that we can calculate the moles of ethanol present in 5.6 L volume of blood and from moles we can calculate the grams of ethyl alcohol .

Molarity= moles/volume in L,

0.065 =MOLES/5.6 L,

MOLES=0.065*5.6 L,

MOLES=0.364 (MOLES OF ETHYL ALCOHOL),

NOW we can calculate the grams of alcohol present in 5.6 L blood volume.

mass= moles* mol. wt,

mass = 0.364* 46.06,

mass= 16.76 grams of ethyl alcohol

A 750 mL bottle of vodka is 46.525% Ethyl alcohol by volume. Assuming the density of everything else is the same as water, what is the mass of the vodka in grams. Note: twice the percentage by volume is the "proof", so an 80 proof bottle of vodka is 40% ethyl alcohol by volume.

Nitrogen, N2, is soluble in blood and can cause intoxication at sufficient concentration. For this reason, the U.S. Navy advises divers using compressed air not to go below 125 feet. The total pressure at this depth is 4.79 atm. If the solubility of nitrogen at 1.00 atm is 1.75E-3 g/100 mL of water, and the mole percent of nitrogen in air is 78.1, what is the solubility of nitrogen in water from air at 4.79 atm?
